Letters by Sir James Douglas, Roderick Finlayson, Dr. John McLoughlin, and others, to Dr. William Fraser Tolmie reflect the Hudson's Bay Co.'s attitude toward the American settlement of Oregon and United States government, the boundary treaty, the establishment of the Puget Sound Agricultural Company at Nisqually, the company's land claims, the seizure of the ship Beaver, and the San Juan Island and Haro Strait difficulty. The correspondence documents a quarrel between Sir George Simpson and McLoughlin.

Sir James Douglas (1803-1877) worked for the North West Company under Dr. McLauglin at Fort Vancouver and later succeeded him as chief factor.
